Broadway  Jazz

In this 2 hour masterclass, James imparts a wealth of knowledge about the origins of Jazz, his vast experience as a Broadway dancer and choreographer, and what it takes to be a world-class performer. Each session will commence with a warm-up, across-the-floor combinations, hot Broadway Jazz choreography, and the chance to ask James questions in a short Q&A session.

Dance Filmmaking

James is a multi-award-winning dance filmmaker and is excited to share his expertise in creating stunning dance films. This is a great opportunity for new dance filmmakers to learn from a master, and existing filmmakers who want to expand their practice.

In this 2 hour masterclass, you will cover the following:

  • Inspiration: where does it come from
  • Input and Output: What’s coming in… what informs your creative ideas.
  • Bringing an idea to fruition.
  • Studio time: rehearsal using your Actors/Dancers to get what’s in your head out!
  • Creating a scene in the studio and transferring it to “set”.
  • Blocking the dancers.
  • Blocking the camera.
  • Leaving “room” to riff on set. Is there even time for that?
  • Lighting!
  • Atmosphere.
  • Set Design.
  • The story you shoot vs the story you edit.
  • Is the story clear? Overshooting…

*All masterclasses will conclude with a Q&A component if students wish to ask direct questions to get the most out of their experience.
